Orlando Hints and Tips
On your first day out, look for the coupon and guide books. These can be found in the foyers
of supermarkets, restaurants and bars. They are filled with information and money off coupons. Don't be
shy about handing in the coupons when you go out to eat or go to an attraction. The staff will expect
them and many will ask if you have a coupon.
Everything you buy will be subject to sales tax at the till. This varies depending on where
you are, but it's usually 6% or 7% in Florida. So when you see a price remember to add the sales tax on
top. If you go into Dollar Tree your purchases will not cost you a dollar, you'll have to pay sales tax on
top!
The air conditioning in many attractions, shops & restuarants can be quite fierce and
cold. It's a good idea to take a light cardigan or jacket with you just to slip on or around your
shoulders. I find that the supermarkets, Wal-Mart, Publix etc., are probably the worst and if I don't take a
cardigan I shiver all the time I'm in there.
Dates - the date is written 'backwards' in the US. For example the 6th April 2009 is written
as 04/06/2009. The month comes first, then the day, then the year. This can be very confusing.
Even after 11 years we still have to stop and think when writing the date. The US (and some parts
of Canada) is the only country in the world to write the date in this way.
Umbrellas and rain ponchos can be purchased in Dollar Tree (everything is one dollar - small
bottles of still water were priced at only 59 cents when we were there in September 2009 - remember that tax is
added at the till/checkout).
Credit cards - there is no chip & pin technology is the US, and there are no plans to introduce
it as yet. In a lot of shops you will be asked for photo id., so you will need to take your driving licence
or passport with you. Many shops will not take a credit card without. Some shops, such as Wal-Mart,
will happily take a credit card without id., you will have to swipe the card in a machine and then
sign a screen with an electronic pen.
Hire cars - if you hire a car you must always have the rental agreement and your driving licence
with you. Apart from the fact that's it's Florida law, having the agreement with you is a good
idea. If you break down (as we have done) then you have the emergency phone number plus all the details you
need to get breakdown recovery.
At most petrol stations in Florida you have to pay before you get your petrol. Just pull up
at the pump, make a note of the pump number, then go into the shop and pay. When you get back to the car
you'll be able to get your fuel.
